ARCHER LODGE – Covered Bridge Road was shut down Friday afternoon as firefighters fought to control a fire in an old unoccupied wood-frame home.
The first arriving North Side firefighters reported fire was coming from the rear of the old house, in the 5000 block of the busy roadway. The home was being used by a local farmer to store hay.
Because a large fire hose was run several hundred feet from the nearest hydrant to the fire scene, Covered Bridge Road was closed and all traffic rerouted by authorities, including Johnston County deputies.
Smoke could be seen from miles away as firefighters quickly brought the blaze under control. The 4:00pm fire left the structure heavily damaged.
The Johnston County Fire Marshal’s Office responded to investigate the cause.
No injuries were reported.
