SMITHFIELD – A Sunday night fire heavily damaged a two story building adjacent to a home.
Smithfield Fire Chief Jeremey Daughtry said the blaze was reported at 8:14pm in the 700 block of Cleveland Road, off NC Highway 210.
Crews arrived to find flames coming from the building.
Smithfield, Wilson’s Mills, and Four Oaks Fire personnel brought the fire under control while rescuing several kittens that were inside.
Chief Daughtry said flammable liquid next to a heating source ignited the fire. The fire caused significant damage. It was ruled accidental.
There was a living area in part of the building, but no one was staying there at the time. The owners home, next door, was not damaged.
All the kittens were accounted for and not harmed.
