Former Police Officer Named In Superseding Grand Jury Indictment

KENLY – A former Town of Kenly police officer has been named in a superseding indictment by a Johnston County Grand Jury.

Andy Curtis Lee Jr., age 35, of Sheriff Johnson Road, Coats, NC was originally indicted in September 2021 on two counts of indecent liberties with a minor. Lee was named in a superseding indictment on April 4, 2022 on the same charges, but this time with an “aggravating factor.”

Andy Lee Jr. worked as a Kenly policeman between May 4 and August 14, 2020. He was dismissed due to “allegations / investigations” according to the Town of Kenly.

On March 24, 2021, the Johnston County District Attorney’s Office requested the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation investigate allegations of indecent liberties involving the former law enforcement officer. After completing the investigation, and consulting with the District Attorney, a warrant was taken out by the SBI.

Lee was charged last September with two counts of indecent liberties and released on a $75,000 secured bond.

The new indictment with the “aggravating factor” alleges Lee committed the crime in the summer of 2020 through his capacity as a law enforcement officer. The April 2022 indictment stated, “The Defendant was a sworn law enforcement officer at the time of the offenses and was sworn to protect and serve the community, and the defendant was introduced to the victim’s family and the victim through his capacity as a law enforcement officer.”

The NC SBI investigation revealed only one alleged victim, a spokesperson said.

This is not the only legal trouble for the ex-cop. Andy Curtis Lee Jr. was charged February 13, 2022 by the Harnett County Sheriff’s Office with felony fleeing to elude arrest and failure to stop for a stop sign/flashing red light.

The Town of Kenly declined to issue a statement about the former officer’s arrest.
