A section of Highway 42 near Clayton was shut down for several hours Monday afternoon following a large natural gas leak.
A construction crew was digging between Glen Laurel Road and Castleberry Road and accidentally struck an underground 8 inch natural gas line around Noon.
Clayton Police and the NC Department of Transportation shut down Highway 42 between the two intersections and fire crews stood by at the scene until a Piedmont Gas crew with specialized equipment could arrive and cap the leak.
Johnston County school buses that normally travel on NC42 had to be rerouted Monday afternoon.
