Godwin Man Dies In Head On Collision

A Godwin man died in an early morning accident Thursday near the Harnett and Sampson county line in what is being described as a head-on collision.

According to the North Carolina State Highway Patrol, Michael Mendoza, 23, died following the accident which happened at approximately 7 a.m. on Spring Branch Road, about a half mile from Ashley Lynn Lane, outside of Dunn.

A N.C. Highway Patrol spokesman said the car Mr. Mendoza was riding in crossed the center line and struck another vehicle head-on.

Mr. Mendoza died on the scene as a result of his injuries. The driver of the second vehicle, identified as Ricardo Bernardino Lopez-Rodriguez of Dunn, was taken to Cape Fear Valley Medical Center in Fayetteville where he was treated for non-life-threatening injuries.

Authorities do not believe alcohol was a factor in the accident and the investigation into the collision is continuing. The Highway Patrol is investigating whether Mr. Mendoza working a third shift might have contributed to the accident.
