BENSON – A Johnston County man has been indicted by a Grand Jury for the death of an employee at Kennedy’s Paradise Pawn in Benson. On January 27, 2022 around 11:10am, police responded to a report of an accidental shooting inside the business at 123 West Main Street.

Police found Trampas Wayne Penny, age 44, unresponsive. Efforts to save his life were not successful.

Following a lengthy investigation by Benson Police, and consultation with the Johnston County District Attorney’s Office, evidence was presented July 18, 2022 to a Johnston County Grand Jury. After hearing the evidence, the grand jury returned an indictment of involuntary manslaughter against Lloyd Bradford Hoyle, age 68, of Benson.

Benson Police said Hoyle, a customer, was carrying a firearm inside the pawn shop to be worked on. As Hoyle was reportedly in the process of unloading the weapon it discharged, striking and killing Trampas Penny.

Detective Sgt. J. Jordan said the fatal shooting was captured on a security camera inside the pawnshop.

Trampas had worked as a gunsmith for Paradise Pawn for 29 years.

As of press time today (Tuesday), the involuntary manslaughter indictment had not been served on Mr. Hoyle, however authorities have been in contact with his attorney to schedule a time for Hoyle to be formally served.

  1. Is it possible, or am I asking too much, for you to stay on-topic? If you insist on hijacking a story to fit your own narrative, then start a blog. Better yet, get a soapbox and stand on it at Market and 2nd St. in Smithfield and talk to your heart’s content.

  2. Pawn shops have been around longer than most people may realize. Many civilizations have had pawn shops, or something very similar including China, Rome and Greece. As a matter of fact it’s believed that they started over 3,000 years ago in China. Something that’s been around that long must be a benefit to those around it.
