Gun Displayed During Hit And Run Crash, Suspects Caught Hiding Behind Business, Police Say

SMITHFIELD – A hit and run crash took an unusual twist after a gun was reportedly displayed at the accident scene.

Smithfield Police said the three vehicle accident occurred at 8:23pm Sunday, May 19 in the 1300 block of North Brightleaf Boulevard (US 301) near Noble Street.

Police said a 37 year-old Selma woman was operating a 2003 Kia northbound in the left lane when the suspect vehicle, a Ford SUV, attempted to pass in the middle turn lane. The Ford SUV clipped the rear of the Kia as it swerved into the middle turn lane, then sideswiped a southbound 2020 Kia driven by a 21 year-old Fayetteville man.

Two victims in the crash, plus an eyewitness, told police the driver of the Ford SUV brandished a firearm before fleeing in the damaged vehicle towards Selma.

A short time later, Selma Police located the hit and run SUV abandoned in the parking lot of Johnston Square Shopping Center on US 301 at US 70. Selma officers later found the two suspects hiding in the bushes behind Tractor Supply and took them into custody.

A Smithfield Police K-9 responded to the shopping center and reportedly found 10.9 grams of suspected marijuana, a .45 caliber firearm, and ammunition near the location the suspects had been hiding.

The driver of the SUV, identified by police as Nickardo Travon Walker, 21, of Fayetteville, was charged with assault by pointing a gun, simple possession of marijuana, possession of marijuana paraphernalia, hit and run causing property damage, no operators license, and fictitious registration.

A passenger in the SUV, Shawnyea Amarion Kemp, 21, of Fayetteville was charged with possession of marijuana, possession of marijuana paraphernalia, and a passenger fleeing an accident scene.

Johnston County EMS responded to the accident scene but no injuries were reported.

  1. Low life creeps should be put away not just for the gun, but they could have killed someone, and they still would have run. The word for what they did is coward. I hope when they do get out of jail, and I hope that will be a long time that they go back to Fayetteville and stay there! Trash like the two of you are not welcome in JOCO. I would also like to add, good job to all the LEO’s involved.

  2. “When Nickardo Travon Walker and Shawnyea Amarion Kemp met, both were lookin’ for a friend,
Someone who would pull a gun in a hit-n-run—who would be there till the end!”

  3. Just dumb. Really stupid. More bad decisions are their future unfortunately. Hard to believe people act like this.
