The drivers of two vehicles traveling on Interstate 40 near Benson exchanged gunfire during a weekend road rage incident.
WTSB News and JoCoReport.com has learned the shooting occurred around 9:40am Saturday in the eastbound lanes of I-40 as the drivers approached I-95.
Witnesses reported that the operator of a Chevy Corvette was traveling approximately 70 mph in the left lane of I-40 and refused to allow a red truck to pass. Witnesses said the driver of the truck became aggressive and got within inches of the Corvettes rear bumper. Eventually the truck was able to pass the car, but while doing so the truck driver threw a Gatorade bottle out the window striking the Corvette.
The Johnston County Sheriff’s Office said the driver of the Corvette was armed with a handgun and allegedly shot his weapon three times towards the truck, firing the gun through the windshield of his own car. The driver of the truck reportedly fired back at the Corvette.
The driver of the Corvette and the witness stopped near Benson and called 911. The driver of the truck drove into Cumberland County where he reported the incident.
No injuries were reported.
Authorities said they recovered handguns and bullets from both drivers.
Sheriff’s detectives are still investigating the incident.
