Smithfield Police are investigating the robbery of a convenience store. Police said it happened at 12:35am Thursday at the Speedway at 2103 S. Brightleaf Boulevard at Wal-Pat Road.
A lone suspect entered the business and displayed a handgun. The suspect demanded money from the clerk then fled on foot with an undisclosed amount of money. Police said it took only 45 seconds for the robber to enter the store, take the money and then exit.
A police K-9 was brought to the scene and was able to track the suspect to nearby railroad tracks but was unable to locate the gunman.
The suspect was described as a black male wearing a black jacket and a red bandana over his face.
Captain T. West said there is no evidence linking the Dec. 26th holdup to a Nov. 6th robbery at the same Speedway convenience store. During the November robbery, an undisclosed amount of money was taken by a lone suspect who was armed with a handgun.
No injuries were reported in either holdup.
