BENSON – Multiple law enforcement officers responded to a funeral service after a handgun was fired. It happened at 1:59pm Monday at the Victory Deliverance Center on E. Hill Street in the Benson city limits.
Police Chief Greg Percy said officers responded to a disturbance at the funeral. Officers learned an argument began during the funeral service and during the altercation a handgun was fired into the ground. Johnston County deputies responded to assist Benson Police.
Police charged David Earl Ward, 43, of Roseboro with an ordinance violation for discharging a weapon in the town limits.
There were no injuries reported from the gunshot, however, EMS responded to the scene after two people in attendance reportedly passed out during the commotion. One of the individuals was transported to the hospital for evaluation.
Afterwards, as a precaution, law enforcement officers stood by at a Harnett County cemetery where the burial took place. There were no further problems reported.
Little by little Benson is becoming a little Durham. No even Durham has shootings at funeral.
