Buies Creek – Jeff Hahs’ two out game-ending RBI single in the bottom of the ninth gave Campbell a 3-2 win over Charleston Southern Sunday at Jim Perry Stadium, clinching the Big South series.
Campbell improved to 14-14 overall and 4-2 in Big South play with the win, while Charleston Southern fell to 14-12 on the season and 3-6 in conference games. The Buccaneers claimed Friday’s opener 12-6 before the Camels evened the set with a 6-0 victory on Saturday.
After the Buccaneers tied the game in the top of the ninth, Adam Wyse singled with one out to put the winning run on base for the Camels. A Charleston Southern error, its fourth of the game, put two on, still with one out, before a fielder’s choice.
With Camels on the corners and two out, Hahs lined the first pitch he saw to right for the RBI single, scoring Matthew Barefoot from third and winning it 3-2 for Campbell.
Hahs went 2-for-4 in the win, notching the Camels’ only RBI of game in dramatic fashion in the ninth. Drew Butler added a 2-for-5 day, scoring a run, while Barefoot was 1-for-5, scoring twice.
Jason Miller and Aaron Miller both went 2-for-4 for the Buccaneers.
Wyatt Tyson (1-1) picked up the win in relief, going two innings with a run on two hits and two walks. Campbell starter Ryan went six innings, allowing a run on four hits with five strikeouts and a three walks in his third straight quality start.
Tyson Messer tossed an inning, allowing a hit with two strikeouts and a walk.
Ryan Stoudemire (3-1) was charged with the loss, allowing an unearned run on two hits with two strikeouts in two innings of relief. Tyler Weekly made the start for the Bucs, pitching an inning with two runs, one earned, on two hits, a strikeout and two walks.
Daniel Johnson came on in relief, pitching five scoreless with 10 strikeouts, surrendering four hits. Eddie Hiott also retired the only two batters he faced.
Campbell took the early 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first. A throwing error on a Butler stolen base allowed Barefoot to score the game’s first run. Two batters later, Butler scored on a double play ball to make it 2-0 Camels.
Aaron Miller cut the CU lead to 2-1 with two out in the top of the second, singling in Brandon Gragilla.
With Campbell still holding the 2-1 lead, Charleston Southern threatened again in the eighth, loading the bases with two away before a groundout ended the chance.
Aaron Miller led off the ninth with a double for CSU, moving to third on a sacrifice bunt. With two out, Nate Blanchard tied it up with an infield single deep into the hole at shortstop, forcing the Campbell rally in the home half of the inning.
