Heavy Rains Blamed For 12,000 Gallon Sewage Discharge

BENSON – The Town of Benson had a discharge of untreated sewage from a wastewater collections system, at the intersection of W Martin Street and N Wall Street. The spill occurred for approximately 11 hours on Thursday, August 8 and resulted in the discharge of approximately 12,000 gallons.

The untreated wastewater entered into the Driving Branch stream in the Neuse River Basin. The discharge was caused by inflow and infiltration of heavy rain from Tropical Storm Debby reaching the sanitary sewer system.

The incident was reported to the NC Division of Water Resources.
