Two members of a local high school cheerleading team were arrested on campus Thursday.
Authorities allege the two teens – both members of the West Johnston High School cheerleading squad – reportedly posted a photo of themselves smoking marijuana online before school began. A concerned person took a photo of the online posting before it was deleted. The person shared the photo with West Johnston administrators who in turn alerted the school resource officer.
Both students, Lauran Kanona Lucas, 18, of Raleigh and Sierra Alyssa Garcia-Copling, 16, of Benson reportedly admitted to smoking marijuana but gave conflicting stories as to where. One student claimed they smoked a marijuana cigarette in the student parking lot prior to school. The second student claimed it occurred in the parking lot of a fast food restaurant.
During a search of Lucas’ car, two partially smoked marijuana cigarettes and more marijuana were allegedly found by school resource officers.
Both students were charged with possession of marijuana and possession of marijuana paraphernalia. The two charges are misdemeanors. After being taken before a magistrate, the teens were released on unsecured bonds pending a court appearance.
