High School Student Had Loaded Handgun On Campus, Police Say

GARNER – Garner Police have arrested an 18 year-old student. Around 3:45pm Thursday, Garner Police said they were notified by school administration at South Garner High School that a student was reported to be in possession of a loaded firearm.

Officers responded to the school and located the student, Rico Owens. Owens was reportedly found to be in possession of a loaded stolen handgun along with narcotics. Owens was arrested and taken to jail for possession of a firearm on educational property, possession of a stolen firearm and possession of narcotics.

The Garner Police Department said they have no reason to believe that there is an ongoing threat to South Garner High School. No injuries were reported.
