SMITHFIELD – This afternoon (Wednesday), the NC Department of Transportation closed the Highway 70 Business bridge over Interstate 95 at Exit 95 in Smithfield for emergency repairs.
A portion of the concrete deck on the bridge developed a hole due to wear and tear and age, according to Andrew Barksdale, Public Relations Officer with the NC DOT. The bridge was closed for the safety of the public and to prevent the damage from getting worse.
The bridge has been closed entirely in both directions for Wednesday night and potentially for the next few days until engineers determine the extent of the damage and then make repairs.
The bridge had previously been scheduled for replacement in 2023.
