SMITHFIELD – This afternoon (Tuesday), the NC Department of Transportation reopened the Highway 70 Business bridge over Interstate 95 at Exit 95 in Smithfield. The bridge had been closed since Feb. 3rd for emergency repairs.
The concrete deck on the east side of the bridge developed a hole due to wear and tear and age, according to Andrew Barksdale, Public Relations Officer with the NC DOT. The bridge was closed for the past week while repairs were being made.
Barksdale said bridge maintenance crews repaired the concrete where the hole was, then paved back over it, restriping the area this afternoon. Crews also repaired a second spot on the bridge that would have formed a hole soon. The bridge was reopened to traffic at 4:00pm this afternoon.
The bridge is scheduled for replacement in 2023.
