Hit And Run Driver Seriously Injures Mother Trick-Or-Treating With Children

CLAYTON – Clayton Police arrested a suspected impaired driver on hit and run charges. At 7:05pm Monday, police responded to a pedestrian being struck by a vehicle in the 100 block of Mulberry Banks Drive, off Glen Laurel Road. Clayton Fire and Johnston County EMS also responded.

Kathryn Turnbull, 42, of Clayton was trick-or-treating with her two children in the neighborhood when she was struck by a vehicle. Turnbull was thrown into a wooded area as a result of the collision. The vehicle did not stop and left the area. No one else was injured.

Turnbull was transported to WakeMed in Raleigh with serious but non-life threatening injuries.

Officers began canvassing the area and interviewing witnesses and began checking possible camera footage from nearby residences. An SUV was seen by witnesses in the area at the time.

A short time later, police received additional calls involving a suspected impaired driver in the area of Highway 70 Business and Highway 42 East operating a gold or tan colored Chevrolet Tahoe. Police located the vehicle in a parking lot of a restaurant on East Main Street. Officers observed damage to the vehicle and located the driver identified as Cecelia Morales, 60, of Clayton. After further investigation, Morales was arrested and charged with felony hit and run and driving while impaired.

Turnbull remains hospitalized at WakeMed.
