The man said that he had swerved to avoid striking tire debris in the southbound lanes which caused his Honda Civic to overturn and end up on its roof between the interstate and the parallel, Old Route 22.

As North Carolina State Highway Patrol Troopers were investigating the first accident, a car traveling north on the parallel road struck the driver of the Honda who was standing next to the overturned car.

The impact threw the man into the DOT fencing which runs along the interstate. He was seriously injured.

Authorities said the suspected hit-and-run driver sped away from the scene in a dark colored Ford. He left the passenger side mirror, broken on the ground, as evidence. Troopers are seeking the driver’s identity.

The injured man was rushed to Wake Med with serious injuries.
