Update: Smithfield Homicide Suspect Captured In Virginia

SMITHFIELD – Smithfield Police are investigating a homicide. It happened around 12:30pm today (Monday) at the Baymont Inn, located at 125 S. Equity Drive.
Police Chief Pete Hedrick said the female victim was fatally stabbed inside a motel room. The suspect fled before officers arrived.
The suspect was quickly identified and an alert was broadcast to law enforcement agencies. Several hours later, Eric Jonathan Nelson, 49, was apprehended near Emporia, Virginia. He is in custody awaiting extradition to North Carolina.
The name of the homicide victim has not been released, nor the relationship between the victim and suspect.
