A home damaged during Hurricane Matthew in 2016 was broken into last week. Smithfield Police said the owner of the home on Highway 210 discovered the break-in while checking on the residence last Thursday.
The victim said $4,700 in property was taken from the home including electronics, blankets, a chainsaw and car rims.
Police said they were able to recover $3,150 of the property but the other items had been sold to a salvage yard for scrap metal and had already been destroyed.
Captain R. Sheppard said there is a person of interest in the case and charges are pending.
