BENSON – A tractor trailer slammed into the back of a Toyota Rav-4 on Interstate 95 in Johnston County early this morning (Tuesday) killing the female driver and injuring two children in her vehicle. The crash happened just before 2:00am in the southbound lanes of I-95 just south of the I-40 interchange.
The tractor trailer was hauling fresh green beans from Pennsylvania to South Carolina when the driver slammed into the rear of the Toyota. After the impact, the SUV spun around in the roadway coming to rest facing north in the southbound lane.
The female driver of the SUV was pronounced dead at the scene. Two young passengers were transported to WakeMed. The driver of the tractor trailer was uninjured.
The accident took nearly three hours to clean up. The southbound lanes were fully reopened just before 5:00am.
The State Highway Patrol is still investigating the fatal collision. The names of those involved has not been released.
The Benson Fire Department and Johnston County EMS also responded.
