Identity Theft Costs Victim $6,000

Smithfield Police are investigating an identity theft case that cost a local woman $6,000.

Police Captain R.K. Powell said the 68 year-old North Smithfield resident recently had her identity stolen. The thieves then used her personal information to purchase merchandise over the Internet then have the items shipped to a location in Illinois.

The incident was reported to police on Wednesday. Captain Powell said there are no suspects in the case.
