Impaired Father Injures His 2 Children, 1 Seriously In Crash

A 14 month old baby remains in serious but stable condition after being ejected from a Jeep that overturned on Highway 96 in the Meadow community in southern Johnston County.

The NC Highway Patrol said Anthony Scott Cerda, 29, was operating his red Jeep Saturday night while allegedly impaired when he ran off the roadway and overturned in the woods.  His two children were in the vehicle.

His 14 month-old was not properly restrained and was ejected from the overturned Jeep and pinned under the vehicle. The child sustained a serious head injury.  His 5 year-old child was injured but not seriously.

Both children were rushed by ambulance to Wake Medical Center in Raleigh.  At last report, the infant was in serious but stable condition.  The 5 year-old was treated and released from the hospital on Sunday.

Cerda was arrested by troopers and charged with driving while impaired, child abuse, and causing felony serious injury by a vehicle.  Cerda was confined in the Johnston County Jail under a $250,000 bond. Photos by John Payne
