UPDATE: Injured Worker Trapped In Machine Dies

UPDATE 9:00PM May 3 – The worker injured in the accident, 44 year-old Vicky Lopez, died Tuesday night in the hospital.

SELMA – A woman was seriously injured Tuesday morning after being trapped in a commercial mixing machine inside a Selma business.  Just before 10:00am, emergency crews responded to the Azteca Market in the Selma city limits.

Azteca Market is a restaurant on Meghan Circle just off Highway 301 behind the Selma Police Department. A separate portion of the building where the incident occurred is where workers make some of the food products.

Officials said the woman was using an industrial machine that mixes food products when she was pulled into the equipment and impaled.  

The Selma, Smithfield and Micro Fire Departments worked for about two hours cutting away pieces of the stainless steel machine to free the victim.

A Duke Life Flight helicopter landed in the parking lot and transported the woman to a trauma center shortly after 12 Noon. She reportedly sustained very serious injuries. 

The Pine Level Fire Department responded to set up a landing zone in the parking lot.  Johnston County EMS assisted with patient care.
