SMITHFIELD – A traffic crash involving two vehicles briefly closed Market Street in Downtown Smithfield, Monday afternoon. The accident was reported at 3:35pm on Market Street (US 70) at Second Street near the Johnston County Courthouse.
A black Jeep and gray Honda collided at the intersection, sending the Jeep into a utility pole. A total of four people in the two vehicles reported injuries. None of the injuries appeared to be life threatening.
Several Johnston County EMS, Smithfield Fire, and Smithfield police units responded to the crash scene. Traffic was briefly diverted off Market Street until the roadway could be reopened.
The cause of the accident remains under investigation.

This is at least the 3rd accident within a week on Market St. The other two were
at 5th and Market. What the heck is wrong with people! And let’s not forget
the people that don’t even see the stop signs.
