SMITHFIELD – An inmate at the Johnston County Detention Center is facing new charges.
Zacharie Michael Kauffeld, age 26, with addresses in Elizabethtown and White Lake, NC, was charged March 27 with interfering with a jail/prison fire system.
Kauffeld is accused of damaging a fire sprinkler head. The cost to repair the damage was estimated at $1,000.
Kauffeld has been in the Detention Center since December 17, 2024 after being arrested on Smthfield Police warrants for robbery with a dangerous weapon and felony conspiracy. Kauffeld and an accomplice are accused of stealing about $3,000 in cash from a victim during a November 4, 2024 robbery in Smithfield.
Looks like he’ll get to stay in detention a little longer.
