An inmate died while in custody in the Nash County Jail on Tuesday night.
Around 10:30pm, Nash County Sheriff’s Office Detention Officers found an inmate suffering a medical emergency in the detention facility. Life saving measures were initiated and EMS personnel were summoned. However, efforts to save the inmate, 42 year-old Anthony Jones of Battleboro, was unsuccessful. He died at UNC-Nash Health Care a short time later.
Authorities said his death was due to a massive heart attack and no foul play was involved.
Jones was serving as an inmate trustee, reserved for inmates with exemplary jail records who are assigned to kitchen, janitorial or laundry duty.
