Inmates Caught Smuggling Contraband Under Prison Fence

Charges are pending against two inmates at Johnston Correctional after they allegedly attempted to smuggle contraband into the state prison facility Wednesday night.

WTSB News has learned corrections officers caught one inmate retrieving a black bag under a fence at the prison at 2465 US Highway 70 West.  The inmate was caught and the bag seized.  Inside, officers reportedly found numerous items including 10 pounds of tobacco products, 4 grams of marijuana, 2 grams of cocaine, rolling papers, duct tape, batteries, two cell phones, two cell phone chargers, and a cigarette lighter.  Guards also found 70 doses of suboxone, a power prescription painkiller used to treat opioid addiction.

Charges against the two inmates are pending.  Their names were not released pending formal charges.
