Internet Scam Costs Teen $3,500

A Smithfield resident lost a $3,500 camera in an internet scam.

On Tuesday, the 18 year-old victim told police she had sold the camera online to a buyer in Nicaragua. The buyer made an online payment for the camera but after it was shipped cancelled the payment.

Police said since the camera was shipped out of the country there is nothing they can do to help the victim recover the item.

Police did not say what method the buyer paid for the item but an internet search revealed this is a frequent scam using eCheck payments. When eChecks are used as payments, sellers are encouraged not to ship the item until the payment clears.
