CLAYTON – A home in the Old Mill Stream subdivision off Covered Bridge Road sustained extensive fire damage. The fire, at 151 Michael Way, was reported around 7:40pm Thursday.

The homeowner was alerted by the smell of smoke and the sounding of smoke alarms to find fire and smoke in the roof area.

The Clayton Fire Department, assisted by several mutual aid departments, battled the blaze. There were no nearby fire hydrants and a tanker task force response was initiated to shuttle water to the scene.

The Johnston County Fire Marshal’s Office said the fire was ruled accidental as a result of an electrical failure at an exterior light fixture.
