Jailor Assaulted By Inmate

A jailor at the Johnston County Jail was assaulted by an inmate Wednesday morning.  Around 4:10am, a Smithfield police officer had taken 56 year-old Mark Anthony Richardson of East Market Street, to jail for a misdemeanor violation of having an open container of alcohol.

While being escorted by a jailor to a cell, he became combative with the jailor and during an altercation allegedly kicked him in the head.

Richardson was subdued and placed in a cell. He was subsequently charged with assault on a government employee. His bond was increased from $250 to $5,250.

The jailor was not injured.
