In 2018-19, 116 students earned their high school equivalency diploma and 21 students earned their adult high school diploma
Johnston Community College hosted a summer commencement ceremony Aug. 8 for students who earned high school equivalency diplomas and adult high school diplomas this year. The event was held at 7 p.m. at the Innovation Academy at South Campus in Smithfield.
In 2018-19, 102 students earned their high school equivalency diploma, and 21 students earned their adult high school diploma from the main campus. An additional 14 high school equivalency diplomas were awarded at Johnston Correctional Institute.
Dr. Teresa McDonald was the commencement speaker. McDonald earned a bachelor’s degree from The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and a master’s degree from North Carolina State University. Most recently, she completed a doctoral degree in adult and community college education at North Carolina State University.
Stop by the Elsee Building, Room A110 on the Johnston Community College main campus in Smithfield any Tuesday or Wednesday at 5:30 p.m. or any Wednesday or Thursday at 8:30 a.m. with a valid photo ID to take advantage of open enrollment for basics skills classes. No appointment is needed. Basic skills offers free courses in adult basic education, GED/HiSET preparation & testing, adult high school, English language acquisition, and transitional studies.
