College recognized for One College model
Johnston Community College was selected as the winner of the 2018 Bellwether Award today (Tuesday) at the Community College Futures Assembly in Orlando, Florida.
The Bellwether Awards recognize outstanding and innovative programs and practices that are successfully leading community colleges into the future.
JCC was one of 10 community colleges in the nation selected as a finalist in the planning, governance, and finance category. One of four North Carolina Community Colleges named a Bellwether finalist, JCC was selected for its One College organizational philosophy for student success.
JCC President Dr. David Johnson said the College was humbled and honored to receive the national award.
“All of JCC has played an instrumental part in adopting One College by making this philosophy work on behalf of student success,” Johnson said. “It works because every employee focuses on students first and foremost. Our bringing this prestigious award home was a total team effort.”
“We are extremely grateful for the support of our community college system and Johnston County economic development leadership as we continue to integrate our One College model into the JCC experience,” he added. We truly are One College.”
JCC initiated its One College model in 2010 with the restructuring of the curriculum division, which included combining continuing education with curriculum programming under the leadership of one vice president and five deans; a merger of registration staff; and creation of a Center for Academic Planning to develop skilled employee pipelines and give students a one-stop fashion of service delivery.
In 2017, JCC continued its implementation of the One College philosophy with the establishment of a Strategic Enrollment Management Committee (SEM) tasked to develop an integrated and collaborative approach to enrollment, retention and completion strategies. The College also moved forward with facility plans for a Student Success Center, a one-stop shop for academic resources and support services.
Established in 1995, the Bellwether Awards are an integral part of the Community College Futures Assembly. The Assembly is sponsored by the Institute of Higher Education at the University of Florida and focuses on cutting-edge, trendsetting programs that other colleges might find worthy of replicating. The Bellwether Awards are given annually in three categories to colleges with outstanding and innovative programs or practices.
