SMITHFIELD – Johnston Community College’s Department of EMS Education serves as one of five regional host sites for the NC Office of EMS Preliminary Paramedic Competition which was held earlier this month.

Paramedic teams from as far away as Bertie, Guilford and Pender counties traveled to Smithfield to compete.

“We are honored to be able to partner with NCOEMS to be a regional host. These are some of the top paramedic providers in the State, and help set a standard of performance in daily practice to which all providers can aspire,” says Mick Stewart, department chair for Emergency Services at JCC.

The event involves teams responding to a simulated real-world emergency with multiple patients including role players and a high-fidelity mannequin. Additionally, competitors had to complete a written exam.

The team from Guilford County EMS took top honors at the JCC competition. All regional winners move on to the 31st Annual Paramedic Competition Finals at the NC EMS Expo in Greensboro in April.
