Johnston Correctional Inmate Dies

An inmate serving time at Johnston Correctional Institution in Smithfield has died.  Charles Allen collapsed and died on June 25th in a prison dormitory, officials announced July 6th.

An EMS unit was called to the prison on Highway 70.  The 49 year-old inmate was pronounced dead at 12:17pm.

Jerry Higgins, Communications Officer for the NC Department of Public Safety, said local law enforcement was notified. “The Division of Prisons is cooperating fully with the investigation,” Mr. Higgins said in an email.

Allen was convicted of larceny from a merchant in Onslow County on May 16, 2019. He was scheduled for release on September 11, 2020.
