Johnston County Schools Name 2018 Adult Volunteer Of The Year

Johnston County Public Schools recognized the Volunteers of the Year at the annual PTA/PTO Council Meeting Banquet held at Smithfield-Selma High on April 23. Photographed (from left) are Johnston County Board of Education Chairman Mike Wooten, JCPS 2018 Adult Volunteer of the Year Steve Pleasants, runners up Floyd Owens, Mary Kay Clapp, and Joy Kemple Martin, and Johnston County Public Schools Superintendent Dr. Ross Renfrow.

Steve Pleasants of Cleveland Middle School was named the 2018 Johnston County Public Schools Adult Volunteer of the Year at the annual PTA/PTO Council Meeting Banquet, held at Smithfield-Selma High School.

Pleasants spends much of his free time volunteering at the same school his wife, Kelly, teaches at. He has volunteered at Cleveland Middle for the last 12 years, and is on track to accumulate more than 80 volunteer hours this school year.

School staff say Pleasants volunteers his time relieving teachers of carpool duty, or operating the front doors now that they stay locked due to security improvements. He is known to stay after school hours with students waiting for parents to come pick them up, and to make small moments with students count, in turn building larger relationships with them.

Steve Pleasants of Cleveland Middle School was named the 2018 Johnston County Public Schools Adult Volunteer of the Year at the annual PTA/PTO Council Meeting Banquet, held at Smithfield-Selma High School.

Staff say that although the work he puts into assisting the school is priceless, he is humble in his service, pouring in hours each week behind the scenes to provide for faculty and students at Cleveland Middle.  Pleasants is known for going above and beyond, exceeding expectations as a volunteer and friend.

The runners up for the Volunteer of the Year Award were Floyd Owens from Cooper Academy, Mary Kay Clapp from Swift Creek Middle, and Joy Kemple Martin from Princeton Middle/High.
