A Johnston County man is accused of insurance fraud and filing a false theft report with deputies. Raul Diaz, 52, was arrested Thursday on the charges.
On March 23, 2013, Johnston County deputies said Diaz reported his 1984 Cadillac had been stolen overnight while parked in the driveway of his home on Otis Court, Middlesex, a Johnston County address.
The vehicle was recovered by the Nash County Sheriff’s Office on February 8th of this year.
Investigators allege Diaz took his Cadillac to a garage in Nash County for repairs in 2013. The operator of the garage alleged Diaz refused to pay for the repairs and was keeping the vehicle until Diaz could pay for the work. Diaz reportedly never paid and is accused of reporting his vehicle stolen when in fact it was at the garage.
The vehicle was recovered in February after the owner of the garage contacted Nash County deputies to ask about the process selling the vehicle to pay for the mechanical work.
Diaz was released on bond pending an appearance in Johnston County District Court.
