Joint ALE Undercover Operation Nets 8 Arrests, 100 Charges At Selma Club

Wednesday night, state and local authorities made eight arrests on 100 felony and misdemeanor charges for drug and alcohol violations at the Gentlemen’s Playhouse, an ABC-licensed club in Selma.

The club owner, property owner, bartender, DJ and security guard were among those charged.

In March of 2019, ALE and the Selma Police Department began a joint investigation after receiving complaints of employees buying, selling, and using drugs in the establishment, selling alcohol to underage patrons, and consuming alcohol while on duty. Over the next two months, undercover ALE special agents made numerous controlled purchases of cocaine, marijuana, and illegal alcohol from employees.

This was not the business’s first run-in with ALE. In 2013, ALE conducted a similar undercover operation which netted 32 arrests of both employees and patrons for various drug and alcohol violations. The ABC permits were cancelled, but new permits were issued in 2015.

ALE, Selma Police Department, Smithfield Police Department and the Johnston County Sheriff’s Office were involved in the operation.
