Buies Creek – After leading Campbell to a 59-7 win over Bluefield College in their 2016 opener, De’Shawn Jones and Trey Sanders have been named Pioneer Football League Players of the Week.
Earning his second career PFL Offensive Player of the Week honor, Jones ran for 142 yards and three touchdowns, leading the way for the Camels who piled up 416 rushing yards. He also caught a pass for 19 yards.
The 2015 Pioneer Football League rushing leader, Jones ran for 122 yards and three scores in the opening half alone. Saturday’s output marked his sixth career 100-yard rushing performance.
Jones punched in three consecutive TDs, all in the second quarter, including a 74 yard run.
Sanders picked up his first PFL weekly honor, collecting Special Teams Player of the Week accolades. The redshirt sophomore returned five Bluefield punts for a Campbell record 106 yards, plus a touchdown against the Rams.
Sanders put Campbell ahead only 2:42 into the game when the redshirt sophomore returned a punt 55 yards for the opening score. The return was the longest in Campbell’s Division I history (since 2008) and also a Barker-Lane Stadium record.
Each of Sanders’ returns on the day went for double digit yards. Sanders also returned a kickoff for 16 yards in the win.
Valparaiso kicker Jake Simpson shared PFL Special Teams Player of the Week honors with Sanders. Valpo defensive back Kellan Hughes was also named PFL Defensive Player of the Week.
Campbell returns to action this Saturday in a 6:00 p.m. kickoff at Chowan. The Camels return home to face Presbyterian Sept. 17th at 6:00 p.m.
