Law Enforcement Responds To Disturbance At Voting Precinct

BENSON – Numerous law enforcement officers responded to a Johnston County voting precinct Tuesday afternoon.

Shortly before 4:00pm, the Johnston County Sheriff’s Office received a report of an “assault” against an election official at the South Elevation voting precinct, located inside the Elevation United Methodist Church, at 5101 Elevation Road, Benson.

Initial reports given to law enforcement indicated a poll worker had been punched in the chest and a lanyard around their neck pulled off.

Authorities determined there was a verbal altercation between an election employee and an unknown female who was upset over the voter ID requirement. The female left the scene before law enforcement arrived.

After investigating, law enforcement officers said they determined there was no physical contact and no assault as initially reported, only a verbal altercation.

The Johnston County Sheriff’s Office cleared the scene. No charges were filed.
