Loaded Fuel Tanker Overturns

A tanker fully loaded with diesel fuel overturned Wednesday morning not far from the Selma Oil Terminals.

Around 9:00am, the tanker driver was traveling on Old Beulah Road between Buffalo Road and Highway 96 when he ran off the roadway into a ditch and overturned.  The tanker narrowly missed a power pole and came within yards of a house.

None of the fuel in the tanker escaped, however a saddle tank on the truck was ruptured in the crash spilling about 100 gallons of diesel fuel on the ground.

Authorities believe the driver suffered a medical emergency which caused him to lose control of the truck.  The driver was not injured in the crash but was transported by Johnston County EMS to Johnston Medical Center in Smithfield to be evaluated for the medical issue.

As a precaution, the Selma Fire Department, Johnston County Foam Unit, and Johnston County Emergency Management responded to the crash.

Selma Police and the NC Department of Transportation assisted with traffic control.  The NC Highway Patrol is investigating the accident.   Photos courtesy JoCoFire.com
