County manager says no property tax increases are anticipated to repay debt
RALEIGH — The Local Government Commission (LGC) approved two bond projects from the County of Johnston at its meeting Tuesday, April 1 in Raleigh.
Johnston County was given a green light to issue $150 million in general obligation bonds for K-12 and community college projects. Proceeds totaling $120 million will be used to acquire land, build, equip, renovate, add on, improve, and expand existing facilities and one or more new buildings. The $30 million balance would be used to acquire land, build, modify, renovate and install additions to Johnston County Community College.
“The $150 million for the November 2024 voter-approved education bond referendum is for Johnston County Public Schools ($120 million) and Johnston Community College ($30 million),” Johnston County Manager Rick Hester said. “As with all referendums, those will be issued in increments over four years or so. Each issuance will be repaid over 20 years. No property tax increases are anticipated for this.”
Also authorized was a request from Johnston County for $30 million in limited obligation bonds. The proceeds will finance construction of a 24-classroom addition to Cleveland High School. The money also will cover a portion of the construction of a 67,000-square-foot building in the county to house an Advanced Manufacturing Training Center. The facility will be owned and operated by Johnston Community College. The aim of the center is to attract new industries to the county with workforce development space and training programs.
“The $30 million is planned to be repaid over 20 years,” Mr. Hester said. “The projects for that include the Cleveland High School addition and the Advanced Manufacturing Training Center in Four Oaks. No property tax increases are anticipated for this.”

This is how we grow progressive liberal government spending and move our county into the same category of Durham, Mecklenburg and Wake counties by doing Johnston County Property Tax Revaluation up to every four years and capturing those jacked up home values and property taxes four years earlier!!! Johnston County Commissioners how about having the Tax Office move up the property tax revaluation up to every two years and then Johnston County can be the free education destination of the world with open or no boarder’s!!! Let capture those Jake’s up property taxes even earlier!!!
Stop voting for BONDS! They will increase your taxes. You’re paying loans for 20-30 years when you say yes to bonds.
Why can’t they approve bonds to build more prisons to deal with all the delinquent adults around here? I think building more prisons makes a lot better sense than building more schools. We already have enough schools.
I don’t understand why you’re so mad. You voted for them to change joco hahaha don’t yall know they all get together and help each other vote
Johnson county will never exceed but so much. They are and have been filling the county up with broke/almost broke/and half broke people for umpteen years. They’ve been filling it up with houses from $250 to $375ish which is people who have very little to no money left over at the end of the week. And when they do have leftover, they go to cary/raleigh because of the lack of quality of the businesses in the county. The board and the commissioners are and have been on this buddy buddy train and that’s the biggest downfall/scam. Start building high end homes and stuff to attract wealthier people, then they may spend money in johnson county.
The more I read comments on this page every day, the more I see how stupid, liberal and just downhill Johnston County is becoming. sad to see. Use to be such a wonderful county until all the demoncrats started moving here, they ruin everything, and I mean everything FACTS!
