Three high school seniors in Johnston County have been selected as Atkinson Scholars for the 2018-2019 academic year and will receive an annual renewable stipend of up to $2,500.
Kaylee Jones, a graduate of North Johnston High School, will attend North Carolina State University to study Biology. Guy McIntyre, a graduate of Clayton High School, will attend the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill to study Political Science. Ruby Jaen-Juarez, a graduate of Smithfield-Selma High School, will attend the University of North Carolina at Greensboro to study Kinesiology.
Recipients must use the scholarship to attend North Carolina State University, the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill or the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. Recipients of the scholarship are chosen by a special selection committee composed of representatives of the three chancellors of the respective institutions involved: the Johnston County Superintendent of Public Schools, the Clerk of the Superior Court of Johnston County, and a representative of the North Carolina State Education Assistance Authority.
Mrs. Mary Atkinson established a trust fund in her will in the memory of her late husband, Dr. Wade Atkinson to aid students who are residents of Johnston County. The North Carolina State Education Assistance Authority (NCSEAA) administers the Atkinson Scholarship Program.
