Man Accused Of Trespassing, Assaulting Police Officers

SELMA – Three Selma police officers sustained minor injuries during the arrest of a trespassing suspect. Bobby Ray Pilkington, of S. College Avenue, Kenly is facing multiple charges stemming from an incident that started around 11:00am Wednesday.

Selma Police were dispatched to a trespassing call at Handy Hugo, located at 350 US Highway 70 East. Police said they encountered Pilkington who refused to leave the convenience store.

While attempting to detain Pilkington for second-degree trespassing, he reportedly tried to pull away from police, then began punching at the officers.

Pilkington managed to break free and run across Highway 70 towards Bojangles. He was tasered and detained with the assistance of additional officers from the Selma and Smithfield police departments.

During the arrest three Selma police officers sustained minor injuries, including scratches and bruising, according to arrest warrants.

Pilkington was charged with nine criminal offenses including three felony counts of assault on a law enforcement officer, four counts of resisting a public officer, misdemeanor second-degree trespassing, and misdemeanor damage to property.

The damage to property charge was the result of $411 in wine bottles the 38 year-old suspect allegedly damaged at Handy Hugo, a warrant stated.

Pilkington was transported to the Johnston County Detention Center and held under a $50,000 secured bond.

  1. 7 years ago I was proud to say this was the father of my kids but not now I’m more ashamed then anything ! Kids stay away from drugs cause this is what long term drug use do to u !

  2. Higher bonds will keep the criminals behind bars. I have noticed, that since Johnston Co. has a new county jail, the bonds are being set much lower. At this rate, the criminal can post bond and be back on the street.

  3. It’s time to evolve punishment for “assaulting an officer” to a heavier sentence. Our police officers are expected to use kid gloves and overextend kindness to the point that they have to be assaulted. Just because you are in a police uniform, doesn’t mean you have to be a punching bag for society’s problem kids.

And for the future commenter on cops being bad…yes, every profession has bad people in it. Labeling an entire profession as bad is irrational, lazy thinking, and just plain false. Bad cops must be held accountable too…we know.
