A Smithfield man was released from the hospital Thursday after being assaulted with a hammer just before midnight Wednesday in East Smithfield.
Police responded to the 900 block of West Street around 11:50pm after the 40 year-old said he was struck in the head with a hammer, causing a serious laceration.
Smithfield Police Captain R.K. Powell said the victim and suspect were engaged in an argument before the assault. Police have obtained warrants for the suspect, whose name was not released pending an arrest.
