The Dunn Police Department and the State Bureau of Investigation are investigating an apparent homicide.
According to Dunn Police Chief Jimmy Pope, officers were called to a residence at 607 E. Bay St. just before 9 a.m. Wednesday.
A local resident walking through the neighborhood spotted the door of the house standing open and called 911.
Upon arrival, the officers found Lassiter Massey, 64, lying on the floor near the front door of his home.
Mr. Massey had sustained a gunshot wound to the right leg. It appeared as if he had tried to create a makeshift tourniquet to stop the bleeding.
Medical personnel confirmed he was dead.
Although still in the early stages, investigation suggests that robbery may have been a motive.
