A man posing as a worker with the NC Department of Transportation scammed an elderly Johnston County woman out of her money this week.
Monday afternoon, the 86 year-old McGee’s Crossroads area resident said she answered a knock on her door to find a man claiming to be with the DOT. He said his crew was finishing up on a paving job in the area and had some extra asphalt left over that they did not need. He offered to pave her driveway for $200.
The woman gave the man $200 in cash. He promised to return within a few minutes to do the paving work but never did.
The suspect was described as a white male wearing a reflective type shirt or vest and blue jeans. He was operating a black Ford SUV.
“We are saddened that this occurred and that NC DOT appears to have been misrepresented. The vehicle description does not match vehicles owned and operated by the department,” stated Corey McLamb, Division 4 Construction Engineer for the NC DOT. “Also it is against department policy to perform for profit work such as this for private citizens.”
“We are pleased the authorities are investigating this scam and will gladly offer any needed assistance to their investigation,” McLamb told WTSB News.
Anyone with information about the suspect is asked to contact the Johnston County Sheriff’s Office at 919-989-5000.
