MITHFIELD – A Smithfield man is facing felony charges after he reportedly used a counterfeit $100 bill to buy a hat.
Chad Dupree Wright, of Packing Plant Road, is charged with obtaining property by false pretense and uttering a forged instrument.
Smithfield Police allege Wright went to Hibbett Sports, on N. Brightleaf Boulevard, and paid for a hat with counterfeit money. He later used the change given to him from the first purchase to buy a second hat.
After Wright left the business on June 20, a store clerk realized the $100 bill was fake.
When Wright returned to the business on June 21 an employee called police. Officers responded and arrested the 34 year-old man.
Wright was given a $15,000 bond.
With a head of hair like his can you blame him for wanting to buy a hat?
The joke is on him, he used counterfeit money to purchase the hat, but the hat he purchased was a counterfeit hat!
