Man Used Counterfeit Money To Buy A Hat, Police Say

MITHFIELD – A Smithfield man is facing felony charges after he reportedly used a counterfeit $100 bill to buy a hat.

Chad Dupree Wright, of Packing Plant Road, is charged with obtaining property by false pretense and uttering a forged instrument.

Smithfield Police allege Wright went to Hibbett Sports, on N. Brightleaf Boulevard, and paid for a hat with counterfeit money. He later used the change given to him from the first purchase to buy a second hat.

After Wright left the business on June 20, a store clerk realized the $100 bill was fake.

When Wright returned to the business on June 21 an employee called police. Officers responded and arrested the 34 year-old man.

Wright was given a $15,000 bond.

  1. The joke is on him, he used counterfeit money to purchase the hat, but the hat he purchased was a counterfeit hat!
