Man Who Abused Children While Babysitting Sentenced To Decades In Prison

JOHNSTON COUNTY — A Kenly man was sentenced to decades in prison after a jury found him guilty of repeatedly sexually assaulting two children over a period of years while he was babysitting them, according to the Johnston County District Attorney’s Office.

On Dec. 18, 2025, a Johnston County jury convicted 56-year-old Oscar Medina of multiple counts of rape of a child, sex offense with a child and taking indecent liberties with a child. The crimes involved occurred over several years, authorities said.

Superior Court Judge Tiffany Powers presided over the trial and sentenced Medina to a minimum of 26 years and a maximum of 33 years in prison.

The case began July 3, 2024, when the Johnston County Sheriff’s Office received a report that Medina had sexually assaulted multiple children at his Kenly-area home while babysitting them. Investigators determined that one child was assaulted over a span of years, when she was between the ages of 5 and 8. The second victim was assaulted when she was between ages 6 and 7.

Following an investigation, Medina was arrested on August 1, 2024 and charged with multiple sexual offenses involving children.

In a statement released after the verdict, Assistant District Attorney Caitlin Slavin praised the victims for coming forward and testifying.

“Our hearts go out to the brave children who had the courage to disclose and testify in this case,” Slavin said. “Their lives will not be defined by the defendant’s actions but by the courage and strength they displayed in the face of incredible adversity.”

Slavin also thanked Detective Devonta Thorne, the Johnston County Sheriff’s Office and the jury for their work, adding that the verdict ensures Medina will no longer be able to harm children in the community.

The Johnston County District Attorney’s Office said it will continue to aggressively prosecute crimes involving the sexual abuse of children.

  1. Who looked at that and thought, I’ll leave my kids with it for years? They waited years to talk? I have doubts. Someone was not listening to them. I’d like to see another charge.

    • U sound like you just read something and run you crapcutter he took care of many kids threw the years an they showed up to his court on his side can’t help joco jury witch is the people have a basic IQ for about 4

    • I had no idea you where in court when they proved no penetration and tha he worked the day that it happened but yall know everything right

      • I’m so sorry that happened to you. I do believe my feelings were a bit intense about the situation. It does say there was a second victim. Maybe the second victim came out and that helped the first victim. I know they have their ways of getting kids to keep quiet, sadly. I just don’t see letting a man like that near my kids.

    • Many times children are too afraid or embarrassed to come forward. Sometimes they are even threatened with harm to family members if they speak up. Yes, if there is suspicion, the adult should take action, but calmly and patiently. We don’t know the details so let’s give some grace.

  2. Hope you all look in the mirror and see that you look as dumb as you sound right now when he retry’s this and the truth comes out. This is complete here say and exposes the problems within the system you all claim to know so well.

    • I don’t believe these children lied and put themselves through all that. The state has a burden of proof and they reached it. Of course, you know that. You are just trying to save face for prison.

      • The kids did what there parents told them to do. This a family feud where one side of the family found a way to win. The “proof” was here say. It wasn’t handled like a normal trial and the judge was even shocked that with so little evidence the jury reached a decision within 15 minutes.

        • They should win against a child rapist. I just knew there was people out there to blame with him. The ones who think children that young can make up a rape. The detectives in JoCo are not the only ones who believe the children. A jury believed them. I also believe them.

      • Like I said your just talking out the side of your neck the post say rape they proved in court there was no penetration you know nothing about the actual case you just know what this post states

        • I absolutely do know. I can look at the creep and tell. The fact that he was found guilty so fast, testimony from an almost juror, common sense, belief in the competence of our law enforcement and your statements themselves. Rape is hard to prove guilty in court. It’s the mounds of disturbing details that get them and get them other charges. You’re saying no penetration, you do know he was molesting them.

          • You don’t know squat your just reading this article talking about I can just look at him and tell you would look like a creep too if you military son got in a car wreck and you went out of state and back no stopping to get him and bring him home then had to turn around and go to jail state some facts about the case instead of just trying to rage bait

  3. *Their parents *Hearsay * through out the years* joco Which* I’d be a little more careful whose IQ I insulted if I had trouble with basic homophones/ grammer.
