Manhunt Leads To Capture Of Two Suspects

Two people are in custody following a manhunt that lasted for several hours this morning in Smithfield.

Around 4:30am, Smithfield Police received a report of burglar alarm activation at the Boost Mobile store at 909 South Brightleaf Boulevard near the Food Lion. An officer was doing a building check at a nearby store and arrived on the scene within seconds. When the officer pulled up, he saw as many as four suspects fleeing from the business.

The suspects fled towards the Brogden Road / I-95 interchange.  Two Smithfield Police K-9’s and a K-9 from the Johnston County Sheriff’s Office located 2 of the 4 suspects hours later.

However, two of the suspects managed to elude apprehension.

Police Captain R. Sheppard said there was no indication the individuals were armed.

Antonio Del Rio Gutierrez and Zane Delino Smith both of Greensboro have been charged with felony breaking and entering, felony larceny, and conspiracy to commit a break-in.  Gutierrez was jailed under a $150,000 bond. Smith was being held under a $100,000 bond.

Police have not said if the suspects may be responsible for other business break-ins in recent days including the V-Mart on Buffalo Road, the BP on South Third Street, and The Little Brown Jug on Market Street.   Photos by John Payne
